5 Plants Related to Cannabis!

Mar 24, 2022 | Hemp + Heart Journal

Mother Earth proves time and time again how we are all part of a web of life, connected in one way or another. According to ITIS, cannabis is a member of the small Cannabaceae plant family which is a member of the rose order, or Rosales. What this means is that if we cast a net wide enough our loved herb, cannabis, would be related to; almonds, figs, mulberries, roses, peaches, apples, plums, pears, and strawberries.

However for today’s sake we are going to focus on direct relatives to cannabis in the Cannabaceae family.

Let’s read on!

Humulus

Yep, even when typing the word I could not stop thinking about “hummus” and as much as it looks like hummus it is actually a different, and common edible plant, beloved by humans worldwide—say hello to hops! The hops plant, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hops, is a member of the Cannabaceae family. If marijuanna is hemp’s sister, let’s call hops a cousin. Hops are loved all over the world because of its ability to make a delicious beverage—beer! As you can sometimes see the similarities between cousins in their features, so you can with hops and hemp. When you take a closer look at hops’ you’ll notice similar genetic expressions in the structure of a hops’ flower and leaves.

Hops Benefits include; easing digestive issues, reducing anxiety, and inflammation!

Hackberry

Though one might think we could make jam from a Hackberry, it is not a fruit but a deciduous tree that is classified with the genus Celtus under the Cannabaceae family. There really isn’t a visual similar trait between cannabis and a hackberry tree, their relationship of both being very resourceful plants is what kinks these two together.

Hackberry uses; sturdy and flexible tree that is often used to make inexpensive furniture and fencing!

Trema Orientalis

Trema Orientalis is part of the evergreen tree family, and another beneficial member of the Cannabaceae family. Trema is a small tree that also has another name—Indian Charcoal Tree. This small tree can also look like a shrub, depending on its environment. Just like the hemp plant, trema is also a bio-accumulator. Trema produces edible leaves and little black fruits!

Trema uses; Like cannabis, trema is a bio-accumulator, and used by farmers to stabilize poor soil conditions.

Blue Sandalwood

The Blue Sandalwood tree is yet another family member of cannabis! Blue Sandalwood, pteroceltis tatarinowii, is a tree indigenous to China and also known as Qing Tan. This member of the Cannabaceae family tree comes forth with many great benefits, similar to cannabis!

Blue Sandalwood benefits; wood is used to make timber, it’s bark can be made into paper, and it’s oil is extracted from its seed and used as a natural remedy to aid one’s cold and flu.

Marijuana – Cannabis

Without stating the obvious, but stating it at the same time, marijuana is clearly the closest relative to hemp. One may not even be able to distinguish these plants apart when they meet the eye! Marijuana is usually classified into three species; cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and cannabis ruderalis. “Cannabis” designates to which plant family it belongs to, and the second words; sativa, indica, and ruderalis are specific to the species.

Species / Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, Cannabis ruderalis
Genus / Cannabis L.
Family / Cannabaceae
Order / Rosales
Class / Magnoliopsida
Phylum / Tracheophyta
Kingdom / Plantae

Marijuana benefits; reduce anxiety, reduce inflammation, reduce pain, control nausea and vomiting, stimulate appetite, relax tightened muscles like that of MS, improve weight gain, and so much more!

Final Words

One could dive deeper into the family, but for now this is the net we’ve casted with direct family members to our loved hemp derived cannabis, pretty cool to see the Cannabaceae family come together under one umbrella!
