Here’s Why CBG Is The Mother of All Cannabinoids

Jun 3, 2021 | Hemp + Heart Journal

If you are relatively new to the health and wellness world, you may be overwhelmed by all the research and information surrounding CBD products. CBD has taken the industry by storm due to its reported effectiveness for relaxation, pain relief, and more. If you are an active-user of CBD, you may have your own testimony of its benefits. But, what do you know about a different, recently discovered cannabinoid — called CBG?

What is CBG?

Similar to CBD, CBG is one of hundreds of natural compounds that can be found in cannabis. It is actually present in both psychoactive marijuana plants, and non-psychoactive hemp plants. However, the cannabinoid itself is non-intoxicating, which means you will not feel ‘high.’ CBG, short for cannabigerol, is considered rare because it occurs in tiny quantities, usually less than 1% of the plant mass.

The process begins like this: CBGA (the acidic precursor to CBG) starts off in great abundance within the hemp or cannabis plant. Then, as it reaches maturity, almost all of the CBGA transforms into CBDA or THCA depending on the plant, but a fraction of that turns into CBG. CBG is known as a parent molecule because it is initially present in the plant, then converts into other compounds during the development process.

So… You are probably wondering, how do you get CBG if it is converted into CBD or THC as the plant matures? Farmers are now working with the genetics of the plant and harvesting up to 2 weeks early to extract CBG before it is transformed. When you buy full spectrum CBD oil like ours at FoCo Organics, the product will contain a minimal amount of CBG because all compounds in the plant are left intact.

How Does CBG Work In Our Bodies?

CBG is processed by the body’s endocannabinoid system, like other cannabinoids. Research shows that CBG binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors where it’s thought to strengthen the function of anandamide, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in enhancing pleasure and motivation, regulating appetite and sleep, and alleviating pain. CBG’s key specialties include reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, remedying pain and nausea, and slowing the proliferation of cancer cells. It’s also beneficial for treating conditions such as IBS, Crohn’s disease, and glaucoma.

CBG is considered one of the most expensive cannabinoids to produce. With no intoxicating effects and a large number of potential therapeutic benefits, CBG is gaining popularity in the wellness world.
